The city of Urbino comes to life as dancers, musicians, artists and artisans fill the streets during the highly anticipated Festa del Duca. Through the exploration of tradition, the festival promotes new cultural and theatrical research among tourists and residents alike. It is not only an historical pageant but, above all, a pageant that allows individuals to discover the rich cultural and artistic heritage of the “Montefeltro” territory, of which Urbino is indisputably the capital. The “rioni”, or districts of the historical centre, through the preparation of shows, exhibitions and workshops, allow visitors to admire the local crafts and customs of the area. During the festival, the bustling energy in the streets of Urbino creates a cheerful, yet surreal atmosphere; it is as if Urbino itself becomes a magnificent stage upon which visitors and residents become the characters.

There is a myriad of cultural events offered within Urbino’s city walls, ranging from theatrical performances and musical concerts, to craft fairs and food banquets. All of this is done to invoke life during the Medieval and Renaissance periods. The result is a fascinating atmosphere connecting past with present; it is not rare to watch both the re-enactment of a ducal wedding and the exhibition of a contemporary film all in the same day. Those who decide to join the festivities have the opportunity to see elaborate Renaissance costumes and taste foods prepared from authentic Renaissance recipes. Dance performances, musical poetry readings and more make the festival a vibrant and uplift-ing event... to which all are welcome!
